Alternatives in Motion named Recipient of Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Quality of Life Grant

July 8, 2003

(Grand Rapids, MI) – The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF) announced today that Alternatives in Motion has been awarded a $10,000 Quality of Life Grant. CRPF awarded a total of $620,969 in Quality of Life Grants to 55 organizations nationwide as part of its Spring 2003 funding cycle of the Quality of Life Program.

The Quality of Life Program, conceived by Dana Reeve, CRPF Director and Chair of the Quality of Life Committee, awards grants to programs that improve the daily lives of people living with disabilities, particularly spinal cord injuries. Funding is awarded twice yearly on improving accessibility, education, independent living and supporting the arts, sports activities and advocacy efforts, among others.

"The Quality of Life program has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception in 1996 and continues to be incredibly rewarding, not only for the grant recipient, but for CRPF and me personally," said Dana Reeve. "As CRPF diligently continues to search for the cure, the Quality of Life Program vigorously works to help people with disabilities in the here and now. These programs are improving the lives of so many by making life easier, more productive and enjoyable for those living with paralysis."

The grant will enable many people, who are on Alternatives in Motion's waiting list, to receive the equipment they need. The money will also help get the word out regarding Alternatives' mission and purpose.

Johnnie Tuitel, Alternatives in Motion's founder said, "The fact that CRPF has supported Alternatives in Motion for the second year running proves they are on track with us regarding the importance of independence for our wheelchair recipients."

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF) is committed to funding research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The Foundation also vigorously works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through its grants program, paralysis resource center, and advocacy efforts.
